FREEDOM IN THE SHIITE POLITICALREASON, RATIONALITY, AND POLITICAL
THOUGT
Mahmood Shafi'ee
Reason and rationality are two fundamental concepts in the Shiite theological and political thought.
Different interpretations of thes concepts may lead either to the preparation of the grounds for freedom or to the impediment of freedom. In Shia
school, the rationalists have stepped away from the traditionists by raising the above issue, but they were unsuccessful in proposing an explanation of
reason. On the other hand, other Faqihs, including Imam Khomeini, resorting to concepts such as "common law", "the method of rationalists", "the
method of the religous", "expediency" and "the Permission Principle" as the secondary religious sources, constructed a discourse which provided the
ground for the study of political freedom. This article is to find out the relationship between these concepts and political freedom from Imam
Khomeini's perspective.
THE IDEAL RULER IN SOHREVARIDI'S VIEWPOINT
Rajabali Esfandiar
The government of the "theologian ruler" is the essence of Sohrevardi's political philosophy and illuminism, based on mystical experience and logical
thinking, plays an axial role in explaining Sohrevardi's political philosophy. The key to underestanding this philosophy, as Sheikh Al-Ishraq says, is
knowledge of the self. Benefiting his own mental abilities, he presents a classification on the basis of which the most knowledgeable member of the
society, who is well-aware of the instinctive and argumentative philosophy, is chosen as the leader of the society. Maintaining the necessity of man's
social life, and of prophecy, he proposed the government of a theologian ruler as a model which can bring about spiritual and material development.

CIVIL MAN IN GHOTB-ODDIN SHIRAZI'S VIEWS
Morteza Yusef-Rad
The article briefly discusses Ghotb-oddin Shirazi's view on civil man and the necessity for politics. According to him, man's character has two aspects:
on the hand, he is a satanic, material, and beastly being; on the other hand, he is a divine, spiritual and humane being. Therefore, depending on the
situation and need, each of these aspects can be the basis for man's civilization. In Shirazi's philosophical system, the universe is based on balance,
order, and the hierarchy of the components of the elements of universe.
Athough, the heavenly world attained these qualities when it was brought into existence, the lower earthly world lacks them and it is politics which can
create order and balance in this world. He also believes that the good of the people is obtained through the balance of the sensual abilities. Since the
universe is balanced, he insists on the necssity of politics to ensure the good of the people and to attain balance.
